Other people have expert knowledge of the tax laws and codes and are able to compete a complex form themselves. But for most of us, employing the services of a tax professional may be the only way to complete your tax forms in the proper manner and get the deductions and credits to which you are entitled. But finding the right tax professional is a job in itself, one that requires research and planning.

There are many types of tax professionals available that offer different levels and types of services. A certified public accountant (CPA) is a financial professional with significant training and very often a degree in accountancy. In addition to their educational training, CPAs must also pass a state-exam before being permitted to practice. Many CPAs also belong to professional organizations that also require them to pass a specific level of tests and exams or take specific courses.

A tax attorney is usually employed by those with extremely complicated financial and tax needs (corporations, the wealthy, etc.) and mainly work in an advisory role, consulting with tax preparers rather than filling out the tax returns themselves. Tax attorneys are law school graduates who have passed the bar exam, so the rates they charge are usually the highest among all tax professionals.

An enrolled agent is a tax preparer that has received extensive testing by the IRS and is equipped to handle the tax issues of those with a relatively complex tax return. EAs are permitted to accompany you to an IRS audit. Because their main focus is tax and tax laws, their fees are close to but not in excess of a typical CPA.

A certified financial planer typically works closely with a set of clients so they can be helpful in filing taxes or explaining complicated tax procedures, even though they do not have the same education and training as a CPA. A certified financial planner should possess a license and accreditation from the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards.

Finally, a tax preparer has the least training of all of the tax preparers and is not required to be licensed. Tax preparers include those working at well-known tax preparation firms such as H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt and others. A tax preparer can assist individuals with simple returns and perhaps help them find deductions but, as stated previously, their knowledge in these areas may be limited. While their rates are the lowest of all the tax preparers, those needing extensive tax help should probably seek help elsewhere.

Whichever type of tax preparer you select to help you with your federal taxes, you should keep several things in mind:

Qualifications

Carefully review the tax prepares credentials, education (if applicable) and qualifications. Find out what their experience is in the areas in which you need tax help. Check to see if your tax preparer is a member of any CPA organizations, state boards or bar organizations. In addition, check their status with the Better Business Bureau. It is important to verify the qualifications of your tax preparer because even thought they are required to sign the completed federal tax form, it is the taxpayer who is responsible for the information contained within. Any errors on the part of the tax preparer, you will have to answer for. In addition, a qualified tax preparer will be able to find deductions and credits that can reduce the amount you owe, which should be incentive enough for you to find a qualified preparer.

Fees

Depending on the level of expertise of your tax preparer, you may either pay a flat fee or be charged on an hourly basis. In addition, some tax preparers may charge based on the amount of your refund, while other may claim to be able to get you a refund that far exceeds anything any other tax preparers have promised. Be wary. These preparers may resort to filing practices that benefit them more than you. Discuss how payment will be charged up front to avoid any surprises.

Interview

Don’t be afraid to interview your tax preparer before giving them your business. Talk to at least five tax preparers before selecting one and try to meet all of the candidates in person. Have questions about your specific problems and concerns ready and make sure you get satisfactory answers. In addition, a qualified tax preparer will have questions of their own for you as well, to get a better understanding of your particular situation. Make sure the tax preparer will be available for your calls and having a tax preparer that is available in the case of an audit is also helpful.

A professional tax preparer can help you avoid the pitfalls of the federal tax preparation process. For taxpayers with complicated tax situations and little knowledge of the tax system, getting the help of a professional is a must.

Whether it’s a credit for a business-related expense, childcare expenses, moving expenses or attending school, a tax credit can leave you with more money at the end of the fiscal year.

A tax credit is a purchase or item that reduces the amount of your actual tax that must be paid to the federal government. It is different (and often more valuable) than a tax deduction. A tax deduction merely reduces your taxable income and, therefore, is subject to the changes in the tax rate. A tax credit, meanwhile, is not dependent on the tax rate and is worth the same to each taxpayer no matter what their income.

In the U.S., most tax credits are included with items that have a larger impact on society. There are tax credits for converting your home to solar power, for buying a fuel-efficient car or for returning to school. Other tax credits help those with a low income make the most of their earnings. There is the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income workers that lets them keep more of their earnings. There are also tax credits for those who use daycare and childcare facilities to aid them in returning to work.

Below are some of the most common federal tax credits.

Energy tax credit

Homeowners who make improvements to their property with materials and equipment that is energy efficient may qualify for an energy tax credit from the federal government. For instance, the federal government currently allows a tax credit for the purchase of an energy efficient water heater, furnace or air conditioner. In addition, upgrading your windows and doors with energy efficient materials also may qualify for the tax credit. The credit is usually about 30 percent of the price of the item, up to $1,500 (the limit set in 2009 and 2010). For instance, if you purchased an air conditioner for $5,000 in 2009, you would receive the maximum federal tax credit of $1,500 (30 percent of the price) on your 2009 tax return.

Restrictions stipulate that improvement must be made to existing homes (or mobile homes or condos) rather than newly constructed dwellings or rentals.

Childcare

Because childcare can be an important and necessary expense for many families, the federal tax credit for this expense can be important. The federal tax credit for childcare is usually equal to a percentage of the cost of childcare minus any reimbursements you may have received from any social service programs. The tax credit is based on your income. If you income is less than $15,000, your tax credit will begin at 35 percent of the expenses; if your adjusted gross income is $43,000 or more, your tax credit tops out at 20 percent of expenses. The maximum tax credit is $3,000 for one child and $6,000 for two or more. The childcare center you utilize must meet federal standards and have a total enrollment of six children or more.

Education

There are two federal tax credit programs that permit students to recoup the cost of attending school: The Lifetime Learning Credit and the Hope (or American Opportunity) Credit. The Lifetime Learning Credit gives you a federal tax credit of up to $2,000 or $4,000 for students in disaster areas to attend an eligible institution. The benefit of a Lifetime Learning Credit is that there is no limit to the number of years you can receive a tax credit and there is no requirement to pursue a degree. The Hope Credit (or American Opportunity Credit provides a maximum of $2,500 in federal tax credit and has recently been modified to make it eligible for students at four-year post-secondary institutions, rather than only two years as in the past. To receive the full credit, students must have an adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less or $160,000 or less for married couples that file jointly.

First-time homebuyer

One of the most popular of all the tax credits, the first-time homebuyer tax credit had recently been expanded to include $8,000 for homes constructed after December 31, 2008 and before May 1, 2010. And users of this tax credit have the added benefit of not being required to repay the credit (unless the owner sells the home within three years). The tax credit is limited to $75,000 for single owners and $150,000 for married couples. A reduced tax credit of $6,500 is offered to homeowners who have lived for in their homes for at least five straight years before moving into a new home. To receive the tax credit, the home must be bought after November 6, 2009.

They are many more federal tax credits available to qualified purchasers that can not only result in much-needed additions to their homes and lives, but be a big advantage to their bottom line come tax time.

They can seem to change almost daily and knowing which paperwork is important to the tax filing profess and which is not can be confusing. This is where a small business tax preparer can be of great assistance.

Navigating the complex seas of tax filing with regards to business requires a specialize knowledge of the laws, tax deductions and tax credits available to owners of a small business. A qualified tax preparer should be able to help you determine which tax forms are best suited to your particular business, keep up-to-date on the latest changes to the tax code and deductions, notify you of which taxes are due at what time and help you determine your gross income, among other services.

Some tips on selecting a tax preparer

So, how should you select a tax preparer? First, assess your needs as a small business owner. Your tax preparer needs may depend on the size of your business, the number of employees, the number of locations, etc. Gather as much information about your business as you can and consult with one of the many tax preparer organizations available such as the National Association of Tax Consultants or your local Certified Public Accountant agency. They may be able to recommend several qualified tax professionals based on your needs.

In addition, there are many resources online that can assist you in your search as well. The Certified Public Accountant organization has an online site that can assist small business owners in finding a qualified tax consultant in their area.

The process of finding an adequate tax advisor may require some effort and time but if you devote yourself to this task the results will be worth the effort. Here are a few points you should consider before making any permanent decision when it comes to your future tax advisor.

Things to take into consideration when selecting a tax preparer

One of the essential things you should first consider is whether or not your tax advisor has the right qualifications for handling your specific tax reporting requirements. Keep your eyes open since the tax preparer you hire actually may not be completely qualified to work on the tax reporting requirements for your business.

In general, many business owners turn to CPAs (certified public accountants) for the advice on their federal tax, since they have the right training when it comes to any business accounting procedure. They have also passed many of the state exams, and that gives them the needed credentials to work in this field.

If possible, get recommendations, from fellow business owners, particularly those in your industry. Ask friends, too, if they have had a good experienced with a tax advisor. Good recommendations will help you narrow down your selection and speed the process.

Next, understand the various types of tax professionals. Depending on the size of your business, you may require the services of a tax attorney, a CPA, an enrolled agent or a certified financial planner. Each of these professionals has a different set of skills, so research their different educational qualification and areas of expertise.

Try to narrow your search for a tax professional to at least five candidates and be prepared to interview them on their experience, their area of expertise and their fees. Ask questions about your specific tax issues to gauge how they would handle them. If possible, ask for references or the opportunity to speak with other customers. And check with the various tax organizations and agencies to guarantee their credentials.

You will no doubt want the tax preparer to be available to you at any time during business hours. No matter what the level of experience or qualifications, a tax preparer that is unavailable when you need them most can result in unnecessary penalties for filing your federal tax return late or with errors.

Long-term relationship helps build trust

It may also be helpful to have a tax professional who is familiar with your industry and, later, your business itself. This means building a long-term relationship with the professional and building a relationship built on professionalism and trust. The longer you know your tax professional, the more than can help your business grow and prosper.

Do not go for the low cost option

Lastly, consider cost. It may be tempting to go with the cheapest of the tax professional options that you have, but doing so may end up costing you in the long run in terms of experience and expertise. For instance, a simple tax preparer may be able to fill out the paperwork necessary, and can do so for a relatively small fee, but they may also miss many of the deductions of your small business or not be aware of changes in the business tax laws.

From form 1040EZ to 706-A, it is a confusing mix of numbers and letter.

But those numbers and letters have a specific purpose depending on your situation and needs. If you are a single adult, married, have children, own a business, recently purchased a house, have a limited income or gotten rich on several investments, there is a form that is made for your situation.

Determining which form you needs may be as simple as visiting the website of the Internal Revenue Service. All of the forms produced by the IRS area available on their website for download and many can even be filled out online, reducing paperwork. For online filing, the IRS can send a confirmation email for your records.

To determine which federal tax form you need, assess your situation. The most basic tax form is the 1040EZ, a single page form that is available to taxpayers whose total income in under $100,000 and their interest income is under $1,500. In addition, filers of the 1040EZ form must be under 65, have income only from wages, interest or unemployment compensation, do not have any adjustments to their income and are single or married and filing jointly.

If you have adjustments to your income, you may want to use the next level of form, the 1040A, most often referred to as the short form. Users of the 1040A can adjust their income for penalties for early withdrawal of their savings, IRA contributions, interest on student loans and jury duty pay submitted through your employer. Users of 1040A can also claim tax credits for child and dependant care, elderly and disabled care, education, retirement savings and earned income tax credit.

The 1040A form cannot be used for itemized deductions, however, so those who wish to itemize their deductions can use form 1040. Any taxpayer can use the 1040 form, though some may have to consult a tax professional because of its longer format. Users of 1040 are required to have an income of $100,000 or more and plan on itemizing deductions such as interest on their mortgage or charitable donations. Also, the 1040 form is used by those with income from a business, rental property, farm, trust or partnership; income from foreign wages, the selling of property, bonds or mutual funds, or need to claim adjustments to their income for moving expenses, health savings accounts, tuition and fees.

If you file your taxes using special tax preparation software, you are required to use federal tax form 1040PC. The form is created by the software and comprised of symbols and type that computers at the IRS will interpret and translate into your tax return.

If you have made an error on forms 1040EZ, 1040A or 1040, you may file form 1040X, the Amended U.S. Individual Tax Return form, to make corrections. In the case of a tax refund, form 1040X must be filled out within three years of the original filing or within two years of the date the original tax was paid. If the correction is based on a worthless security or a bad debt, form 1040X must be filled out within seven years of the filing of the original tax form.

Homeowners may want to make themselves familiar with form 1098, the Mortgage Interest Statement, which is used to report interest the taxpayer has paid on their mortgage. This interest is usually tax deductible.

Form 1099-R is used by taxpayers to report redemptions from qualified retirement accounts. This form is sent to the taxpayer by the financial institution with which they have made investments and must be mailed by February 15 of the year that follows the year in which the retirement account was redeemed. On these forms, an amount in Box 5 may indicate that the account in question has funds available that has been previously taxed before being deposited into the account.

Finally, form 1099 is submitted by taxpayers to report income that comes from sources other than wages, salaries and tips. This form is sometimes referred to as an “information return” and must be submitted by the taxpayer for each transaction in three copies for the payer, payee and IRS. An example of form 1099 use is payment to independent contractors, and a business must submit a form 1099 for each contractor who is paid $600 or more for the past year. Because of this requirement, many businesses end up submitting hundreds and thousands of for 1099 each year, so the IRS requires those who have to submit 250 or more 1099s to do so electronically.

There are hundreds of other IRS federal tax forms that are designed to meet the unique needs of students, business owners, homeowners, retirees and independent workers, among others. Take the time to consult with a tax professional to find out which forms are suited to your needs.

By preparing your file, doing your research and reading up on the latest changes to the tax codes, you can not only lower the amount you owe but actually maximize your chances for a refund.

You’ve no doubt seen the news reports showing frenzied tax filers rushing to the post office at midnight on April 15 to meet the IRS deadline.

Chances are these people didn’t successfully prepare for the tax process and are no doubt missing out on the maximum number of deductions they were allowed and, in turn, not getting the refund they could have received.

Planning your federal tax return carefully will not only help you avoid that last minute rush, but give you the time to review your return to make sure you’re getting the biggest refund possible.

According to a consumer credit professional, planning your tax return carefully can help avoid costly mistakes. Taxed that go unpaid, they said, can permit the IRS to place a lien on your property and other assets, and that unpaid tax liens can stay on your credit report for as many as 15 years and that tax liens that are paid can stay on your credit report for seven years.

So it’s important to begin your tax preparation as soon as the tax season (January to April 15) begins. Amasses all of your important paperwork as soon as possible: your W-2 forms, your receipts, your past tax forms for reference, etc. Having all of this material readily available will save you hours of frantic searching.

Next, familiarize yourself with the current tax laws. Since the laws can change each year, your allowable deductions may change as well, so do your research and study the available books and other material available online to find out the newest rules.

Assess your current situation. Have there been any major changes in your life? Major changes could mean new possible deductions that were not available to you in the past. Or you may qualify for an increased deduction in some areas. Some areas of deductions you may wish to look at closely include charitable donations (including clothes and household items that you have donated), state and local sales taxes, disaster deductions or theft deductions (damage by floods, earthquakes, ice storms or burglary that is not covered by insurance), education expenses (job training programs and classes to improve your work skills), expenses related to a job search, real estate (mortgage interest, a refinanced loan, or the sale of a house, etc.), medical expenses and, yes, even expenses related to tax preparation.

Consult with a qualified tax professional to make sure you are getting the most deductions you are qualified to receive. Don’t take it for granted that you know what you are able to deduct. There are a number of semi-obscure areas that are eligible for deductions.

But before you list any deductions, make sure you have the paperwork to back it up. Keep the receipt to the big-ticket items that you have purchased over the past year: appliances that meet energy efficient requirements (and are eligible for a tax credit), improvements to your home such as new windows and doors that are also energy efficient. Tax credits are even available on certain models of cars that meet U.S. energy standards.

Finally, here are some simple steps to get the most from your tax refund:

File as soon as possible. The soon you start the filing process, the more time you will have to make sure everything is correct and all of the possible deductions have been applied. And filing early means you will get your refund that much quicker.

Double-check your work. By double-checking your work, you not only ensure that you have applied for as many deductions and credits as you can, but you can fix any mistakes and avoid the possibility of an audit. If possible, have your spouse, a friend or a tax expert double-check your work.

Use tax software. By using the latest version of the available tax software, you can be assured you are getting the maximum deductions and the maximum refund. Many of the tax software programs on the market also provide free online help as well, so help is just a phone call or an email away.

Consult a tax professional. It may be a source of pride to know that you completed your tax form yourself, but for complicated forms, it might be better to leave it to the professionals. A professional tax preparer can find the deductions that you might have missed, as well as the errors you might have made. If you are preparing the taxes for your business, you make want to seek the help of a professional well versed in the tax laws concerning your business.

A misplace number or accidentally omitted information can result in a notification from the Internal Revenue Services that your return is being audited.

But getting a note or call from the IRS is not necessarily reason for panic. Preparation is the key to surviving an IRS audit and even if you haven’t been called for an audit, there are steps you can take now to minimize the process should it occur.

First, there are certain items and factors that could raise a red flag with the IRS and lead to an audit. Making large charitable deductions, listing excessive itemized deductions or listing large business expenses can contribute to the likelihood of an audit, as will concealment of cash payments, overly complex business transactions or investment transactions, tax shelter losses or prior tax problems or audits.

If you find yourself in any of these scenarios and are called for an audit, prepare yourself. Go over the details of your tax filing several times to try and determine the cause for the confusion. If you have a tax professional, consult with them as well. A certified public account or a tax attorney may be a good resource to consider and most have experience with the auditing process and the tax laws.

Next, begin assembling the paperwork and records that pertain to the issue under investigation. Do not bring paperwork that is not related to the matter to be discussed, since that information could trigger a further investigation. Ten days before the interview, send written notice to the IRS that you will be recording the interview on audiotape (video taping is not permitted).

Occasionally, the audit may take place in your office or place of business. If this occurs, instruct your employees not to discuss business-related matters with the IRS agents and if they are asked questions by the IRS agent, instruct them to refer all inquires to you. If you are asked by an IRS agent about a matter not listed in the notice you were sent, you can refuse to answer unless they file a formal request.

And while it may seem to be a case of negative thinking, begin considering the possible settlements you are willing to make. Depending on the severity of the tax infraction, you may be required to pay cash penalty: The IRS imposes a 20 percent penalty on any tax underpayment connected to over or under evaluation of property, disregard for IRS rules or a substantial understatement of your tax liability. A 75 percent is imposed for more serious tax-related infractions associated with the categories listed above that the IRS has determined is fraud-related.

The IRS may request the interest due for violations of fraud, failure to file on time undervaluation of property. In cases such as this, they will impose an interest rate on the money owed from the due date of your return until it is paid.

Finally, in the most serious cases of tax evasion and fraud, the violator may be tried and convicted, as well as assessed fines and forced to forfeit their assets.

The key to avoiding an audit later is to maintain accurate records today. Compiling an accurate and easily accessible collection of records of all important transactions will come in handy should you ever find yourself across the table at an IRS audit. Those records will be your first line of defense in the case of an audit.

You should maintain a file of at least three years of records and tax returns. These files should include checkbook stubs, receipts from purchases throughout those years, bills from services you have performed, as well as paperwork related to investments, etc. In addition, keep a journal of deductible items, noting the date on which they occurred, and track the cost basis for your property.

If you employ a tax professional, either a tax attorney or a CPA, make sure they keep accurate records of your transactions, investments, expenditures and assets as well. They should keep abreast of when certain tax forms are due (not all tax forms are due on April 15) and should get them in on time to avoid running afoul of the IRS.

While an audit can be an aggravating ordeal, it is less likely than it once was for middle-income taxpayers. Although the IRS has increased the number of audits it conducts, they have turned their attention to those on the upper end of the tax bracket. Since 2001, audits of those earning more than $100,000 have doubled.

By maintaining accurate tax records, taxpayers who find themselves audited by the Internal Revenue Service will be well prepared for the process. Begin your defense now by amassing the proper resources (federal tax records, receipts, bills, etc.) and avoid problems down the line.

But if you’re just starting out and getting your business off the ground, you should become familiar with the federal tax ID number system and how it applies to you.

A federal tax ID number is the business equivalent of a social security number. It is an identifying code assigned to your business by the Internal Revenue Service and used to identify your company to the various federal departments charged with the regulation of businesses such as yours. It is issued to any business that must pay withholding taxes on their employees.

The federal tax ID number is known by several names: the Employer Identification Number (EIN), Tax Identification Number (TIN) or the Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). If the number is used solely for identification purposes (rather than reporting taxes) it is considered a TIN.

Employer identification numbers are issued to all companies (single ownership, corporations and partnerships), not-for-profit organizations, government agencies, estates and trusts and other business organizations. In the case of single owners of businesses, they may opt to use either their Social Security Number or their EIN.

The employer identification numbering system was developed by the IRS in 1974 and consists of nine numbers written in a 00-0000000 format (as opposed to the 000-00-0000 format of a Social Security Number). Up until 2001, the first two numbers in an EIN indicated the geographic location of the particular business (following a code set up by the IRS). However, in 2001, the first two digits came to represent the location of a particular IRS district.

If you are wondering if your business needs an employer identification number, the IRS stipulates that any partnership, limited liability company, S corporation, (corporations that choose to pass their corporate income and loses, their deductions and credit on to their shareholders) or non-profit requires an EIN. For businesses that are considered a proprietorship, the owner’s Social Security Number is used on tax forms.

To apply for an employer identification number, you need only contact the IRS by phone, fax, mail or online. If you apply online, you will not need to fill out Form SS-4 (it is available on the site). All other forms of application require that you fill out a Form SS-4 before hand to have the information readily available.

To apply online, simply visit the IRS website. There, you will find an online EIN application with several questions for you to answer to determine if you need an EIN. The site also includes links to help topics that will assist you in filling out the information. The answers and information you submit is automatically validated during the process and once you’ve completed the form, you will immediately receive an EIN. A confirmation form will be made available for you to download and print or save to your computer. The online application form is available on Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Eastern, Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Eastern and Sundays from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., Eastern.

The online EIN application process is available to all businesses, agencies or offices that are located in the U.S. or its territories. The principal owner, partner or officer must have a valid Social Security Number to use the online process.

To apply by telephone for an EIN, call the IRS at their toll free number, 1-800-829-4933 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. (local time), Monday through Friday. The principal owner of the business must be the person making the call and they should have the form SS-4 handy to supply the relevant information. You will receive your EIN immediately upon completing the process.

Person applying by fax can send their completed Form SS-4 to the IRS at a local number available on the IRS website. The fax service is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The IRS asks that you not fax and call regarding an EIN because a duplicate EIN may accidentally be assigned to you. Also note that your EIN number will be sent to you within four business days and will be faxed back to you without a cover sheet.

Finally, you can apply by mail by sending Form SS-4 to your area IRS office at an address available on their website. An EIN will be mailed back to you within four weeks.

An SS-4 form is available at local IRS offices or can be downloaded from the IRS website.

Obtaining an employer identification number is an important step in establishing a business. It ensured that you and your company are in compliance with federal laws regarding taxes and employee withholding.

Of these two, the first may be the most vexing for many people.

The federal income tax has been a point of debate and discussion for people ever since it was instituted in 1861, when the government imposed a tax of three percent on all incomes of more than $800 to help pay for the Civil War (the tax was later repealed by was, of course, replaced by another general tax in 1862). Since that time the federal tax has been raised, lowered, frozen, etc. But it has remained a constant in line in the United States.

So what, exactly, is the federal tax? A federal tax is basically a bill from the government for individual earnings from a salary or investment earnings. Nearly all governments in the world collect some form of taxes from their citizens. The federal tax in the US is unique in that the United States uses citizenship as a factor in whether a person’s income is to be taxed, in addition to residency in the US Even those United States citizens who do not reside or earn their living in the United States need to pay tax on their income.

In the US, taxes are collected on goods and services at the time they are issued, but also collected at the end of a fiscal year. In the case of the US, taxes are also collected at the end of a fiscal year in the form of income tax. The amount of federal tax a person pays is dependant on their income and other factors. This is called a progressive tax because the amount they are required to pay can rise or fall with their income.

With regards to individuals, a federal income tax can only be imposed upon an income on the plus side, not on an income that results in a net loss. The way the federal income tax structure is set up in the US permits individual citizens to claim a specific amount of non-taxable income and if they do not earn above the standard deduction amount in a fiscal year, then they are not required to pay a federal income tax.

In addition, employers deduct a percentage from an employee’s paycheck to meet federal tax obligations. These deductions are determined by the employee’s dependency status, their marital situation and other factors including contributions to Social Security, union dues, insurance, etc. These yearly federal deduction totals (along with state deductions) are reported on the annual W-2 forms.

When income tax season arrives (generally from January to the April 14 deadline), individuals must report all of their income (wages and investments) for the year. A standard deduction based on their wages is subtracted and the remainder of the money is regarded as federally taxable income. A chart with the current federal tax rate is consulted and if the amount withheld by the employee’s payroll department higher than this amount, the employee’s is owed a refund. If it is lower, the employee must pay the different to meet their federal tax obligation.

While most middle class citizens can expect to pay a federal tax of about 15 percent of their gross income, the government allows them to deduct for certain expenses, including expenses related to the purchase of items related to their occupations, mortgage interest on a home, contributions to an individual retirement account (IRA), or donations to charity. In addition citizens can receive credit on their federal tax if their income falls below a specified level (called an Earned Income Tax Credit) or credit for the amount they spend on daycare.

Businesses may also receive deductions or credits on their federal tax for corporate expense accounts, though these amounts must be documented and meet certain IRS rules and regulations.

Overall, income and payroll federal taxes make up four of every five federal dollars, with corporate federal taxes adding another 12 percent in revenue. In 2008, more than $2.4 trillion in federal tax as collected by the government and the individual federal income tax is the largest source of federal revenue, making up 8 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). With the introduction of Medicare in 1965, federal taxes on payrolls ballooned from 1.6 percent of the GDP in the 1950s to more than 6 percent in the 1990s.

There have been recent attempts to reform the federal tax structure and simply the federal taxation process. In 2005, the President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform categorized the current tax system as too complex and contains penalties that they claimed made it disadvantageous to save money or invest. In addition, other organizations have been created that call for major federal tax overall, including the Americans for Fair Taxation, Americans for Tax Reform and Citizens for a Alternative Tax System. Sill other groups are working for the abolition of the entire federal tax system.
